luv414 The Dead Zone

The Dead Zone

in every urban center in the world, late at night after all the good people have gone to bed, The Dead Zone comes on the air. it can only be found at the bottom of the FM radio dial after all the busy city streets are empty. no one knows where the sound found at the low end of the FM dial emanates from but when it crackles to life it is the perfect audio companion for the desolation of urban sprawl. so if you find yourself out driving late at night and notice no one else around, wind down your FM dial and you may find yourself in The Dead Zone.

luv412 What The Beat

What The Beat??!!?

everytime i go to my favorite second hand record emporium in Montreal, Death Of Vinyl, i always look through their “What The Beat??!!?” section. initially created as a home for all the genre non conforming electronic music records; the house, techno, breaks & drum’n’bass records that would never be played by djs that strictly abide by their genres. the section where producers who dared program their beats so as to not directly fall into any one category would end up; the “Island Of Misfit Toys” for electronic beat records. right up my alley. this mixtape is made up from records found in this bin over the years (or that would fit snug alongside the ones that were). what the beat indeed!

too spoiled by luv

this chipper mixtape of early nineties happy house music marks the 11th anniversary of dj luv’s records. it has been longer than i like since i last put up a new mix. my 3 turntables were in the shop for their 400th mix tune up (by the Technics 1200 wizard at DCElectronics). after getting them back i wanted to give them a good work out so i went back to the reason i started using 3 turntables in the first place. to properly mix house music. using three decks makes the mixing experience less linear and leaves more room for experimentation and heavy mixing. my personal style, dubbed “abstract house”, is a relentless kind of dance music made up of layers upon layers of rhythms, melodies, vocals, oddities and grooves intended to keep the dancefloor bumpin’. these early nineties house music 12″s are firmly embedded in the foundation of my abstract house. play loud for maximum bounce. thanks for listening.

The Start Of A Lovely Day

this past Sunday some buddies from Montreal dj collectives the Jazz Amnesty Sound System, Canicule Tropicale and Tupi Collective spent over eight hours in the park playing uplifting music for the folks that came for some afternoon delight. it was very fun. this mix is a sketch of how the day started with luv behind the decks. i was going for a groovy mix of soul jazz with distinct Sesame Street flavors and some churchyard vibes for good measure. it was a lovely day.

luv408 They Found Us

They Found Us

it was 20 years ago, way back in 2001. i was wandering around the countryside with my old buddies Pliskin and Dr. B.J. Harris. it was just after nightfall when the still of the evening was disturbed by the sudden appearance of a U.F.O. we stood there stunned for a moment, basked in the alien light that shone down upon us. the last thing i remember was B.J. saying “they found us.” then there was a bright flash that knocked me unconscious. i came to the next morning in the middle of a field alone, haven’t seen Pliskin or the Doctor since.
