Headlong Into The Tempest

the past few years have been pretty heavy, and that doesn’t look like it’s gonna change anytime soon, so as i finish my 50th orbit around our closest star i choose to go Headlong Into The Tempest. attempting to weather this storm with my chin up, a stupid grin on my face, dancing all the way. doing the best i can and hopefully helping a few folks endure and embrace the absurdity of the chaos. starting with this mix of new electronic sound from 2022.

this chipper mixtape of early nineties happy house music marks the 11th anniversary of dj luv’s records. it has been longer than i like since i last put up a new mix. my 3 turntables were in the shop for their 400th mix tune up (by the Technics 1200 wizard at DCElectronics). after getting them back i wanted to give them a good work out so i went back to the reason i started using 3 turntables in the first place. to properly mix house music. using three decks makes the mixing experience less linear and leaves more room for experimentation and heavy mixing. my personal style, dubbed “abstract house”, is a relentless kind of dance music made up of layers upon layers of rhythms, melodies, vocals, oddities and grooves intended to keep the dancefloor bumpin’. these early nineties house music 12″s are firmly embedded in the foundation of my abstract house. play loud for maximum bounce. thanks for listening.

They Found Us

it was 20 years ago, way back in 2001. i was wandering around the countryside with my old buddies Pliskin and Dr. B.J. Harris. it was just after nightfall when the still of the evening was disturbed by the sudden appearance of a U.F.O. we stood there stunned for a moment, basked in the alien light that shone down upon us. the last thing i remember was B.J. saying “they found us.” then there was a bright flash that knocked me unconscious. i came to the next morning in the middle of a field alone, haven’t seen Pliskin or the Doctor since.

well that was fucked up

“well that was fucked up” sums up 2020 pretty well. things felt uneasy at the end of 2019, like the cracks in the bottom of the basin were getting bigger and bigger, and things were getting heavier and heavier. something was about to give. that’s why i titled the first mixtape of last year “Hold On” because it felt like 2020 was gonna be a rough ride. as i started putting together 2021’s inaugural mix i intentionally chose only new music from 2020 and unintentionally created a mix that represented the crazy year that was. “well that was fucked up” is designed to help exorcise our collective ill feelings from 2020 by grooving them out of our system. clearing our minds and souls to help us better tackle the challenges that lay ahead. may it help you power the future.

Music For Empty Discotheques

ever since the clubs closed down it has been eerily quiet on dancefloors around the globe. there have been rumors from all sectors reporting folks hearing strange sounds and groove inducing rumblings emanating from many clubs that have been in lockdown for weeks. there is speculation that sound systems have spontaneously been turning on. trying to mimic through scraps of misremembered sounds and rhythmic patterns the music they used to play, in an attempt to lure us back to the dancefloor. it seems the relationship between dancers and sound systems is a symbiotic one. the machines miss their human counterparts, instinctively knowing we are both stronger when we are together.
