luv452 Barry's Bonds

Barry’s Bonds

between 1962 and 1987 John Barry scored 11 movies from the James Bond canon of suspenseful spy flicks based on Ian Fleming’s novels from the fifties and sixties. even though ‘The James Bond Theme’ was originally written by Monty Norman, it is John Barry’s arrangement that is seared into our collective unconscious. having scored much of the franchise’s output over the first 3 decades (spanning 4 different actors portraying Secret Agent 007) John Barry’s work has left an indelible mark on Hollywood. this mix showcases music from all of the James Bond films John Barry scored, plus a few related extras, and loosely follows the “Bond Formula” (the general plot structure most of the movies follow).

luv’s 420 joint

when dj luv’s records started i had the idea of making a mixtape dedicated to marijuana. every mix up here was made in a haze of pot smoke so it was inevitable that time and inspiration would coalesce into luv’s 420 joint. an epic journey that crosses many genres and eras exhibiting how this glorious weed is for everyone and all can reap it’s benefits. to quote Louis Armstrong :
“We did call ourselves Vipers, which could have been anybody from all walks of life that smoked and respected ‘gage’. That was our cute little name for marijuana… We always looked at pot as a sort of medicine, a cheap drunk and with much better thoughts than one that’s full of liquor… the respect for it (gage) will stay with me forever. I have every reason to say these words and am proud to say them. From experience.”
so from one viper to another, happy 4/20. now take a hit off luv’s 420 joint.

Ennio Above Suspicion

just over 10 years ago i put up a mixtape of Ennio Morricone’s spaghetti western soundtracks called A Gringo Like Ennio (luv112). when tackling a mixtape of Morricone’s compositions part of the challenge is what to choose, considering the hundreds of soundtracks he has composed. that’s why i chose all westerns for the first Ennio solo. a decade on here’s a second all Ennio mix, the theme : crime and suspense. a moody blend of movie music magic for those who love all things Ennio.

The Dead Zone

in every urban center in the world, late at night after all the good people have gone to bed, The Dead Zone comes on the air. it can only be found at the bottom of the FM radio dial after all the busy city streets are empty. no one knows where the sound found at the low end of the FM dial emanates from but when it crackles to life it is the perfect audio companion for the desolation of urban sprawl. so if you find yourself out driving late at night and notice no one else around, wind down your FM dial and you may find yourself in The Dead Zone.

luv368 You May Never Go Home

You May Never Go Home

he wakes up every morning in his beautiful apartment, goes to his ideal job, earns enough to live a satisfying and comfortable life. but lately he finds himself feeling too comfortable and less satisfied, in fact he is even a little bored. he needs to shake things up, break free from the monotony of his routine, even if only for a little while. a vacation, that’s what he needs.

searching for the ideal holiday he stumbles upon a travel agency specializing in “extreme” vacation destinations whose slogan is “vacations so good you may never go home!” intrigued he sets up an appointment that day and heads on over to their office to discuss options. when he arrives he is sat at a table with two representatives who go right into their spiel. they talk about exotic locales with lots of excitement, about being taken out of your element to gain a new understanding of the world and yourself. emphasizing that it will be an experience he will never forget.

completely sold on the idea and very much ready to go on an adventure the agency reps hand him a pen and a contract. hastily going over the details he signs on the dotted line, thrilled at finally getting the change of pace he was yearning for. then something from inside the pen pricks his finger. suddenly he starts feeling woozy, voices get muffled, his vision blurs and he passes out.

after what feels like an eternity of drugged unconsciousness he wakes up lying on the floor of a less than reputable establishment that he does not recognize. as he tries to stand he notices that people around him are speaking in a language he doesn’t understand and can’t place. he reaches for his cell phone and wallet, but they are gone. leaving the barroom he steps out into bright daylight onto a street he’s never been on before. this is when he realizes that he is in a foreign country with no money and no passport.

this is the adventure the agency had planned. they would strand him in a far off land with nothing and see if he can find his way home. so still a bit dazed but determined, with a will to survive and no other options, he sets off on an adventure homeward bound.

this deep dive into original movie scores is an attempt to soundtrack his journey.

Sex and Violence

five years ago i was gearing up to make the 100th mix for this website. around the same time a new friend and documentary film maker became curious about my record obsession and mentioned that he would like to film me while i was creating a mix. the combination of a film and the 100th post meant i had to take a unique approach to this mix. which got me to thinking about Monty Python’s Flying Circus and the absurdly clever way in which the episodes evolved. i wanted to make a mix like that; so i mapped out the first Monty Python episode Whither Canada?, noting all the skits, bits and segues. then i choose music, dialogue and sound effects and, while using the episode breakdown as guide, made a new journey. keep in mind this isn’t an attempt to soundtrack the show, it’s more about creating something completely different. to better understand i suggest watching Vincent Guignard‘s The Luv Of Music and then listen to luv136 Whither Canada?

now to the mix at hand. a follow up mix that gets it’s cues from the second Monty Python’s Flying Circus episode intriguingly titled Sex and Violence.

when i started this site in 2010 i also launched a craft (affectionately known as the “satellite of luv”) into outer space to take photographs and record strange and wonderful sounds. we have been monitoring s.o.l.’s journey since, and recently we received a unique bit of audio. it seems the satellite of luv got sucked into a black hole. this is a recording of the event in it’s entirety.

20 Minutes Into The Future

here’s a conceptual mix about the “sound of the 1980s” that has been brewing since the SYNTAX ERA began. it’s that brand new synth sound palette that emerge in the late 70s and dominated the soundscape of the following decade. preset orchestral hits, gated drums, vocoder voices, the cleanest distorted guitar sounds you’ve ever heard, analog crashing into digital; a sound so unmistakably eighties. this is an immersive event so prepare yourself; you may come out the other end with A Flock Of Seagulls haircut wearing shoulder pads craving “new” Coke and scrounging in your pockets for quarters so you can hit the arcade. cue dramatic intro.
