The Dead Zone

in every urban center in the world, late at night after all the good people have gone to bed, The Dead Zone comes on the air. it can only be found at the bottom of the FM radio dial after all the busy city streets are empty. no one knows where the sound found at the low end of the FM dial emanates from but when it crackles to life it is the perfect audio companion for the desolation of urban sprawl. so if you find yourself out driving late at night and notice no one else around, wind down your FM dial and you may find yourself in The Dead Zone.

Virgin Ambient Flyer

i have always had the sneaking suspicion that Richard Branson co-founded Virgin Records in 1972 to better soundtrack his future hot air balloon adventures. as you may recall, in 1987 he became one of the first people to cross the Atlantic Ocean in a hot air balloon, crash landing in the water off the coast of Northern Ireland. at the time their balloon, the “Virgin Atlantic Flyer” was the largest in the world; so naturally it sunk.

recently i met a longtime employee for the Imperial War Museum in Duxford, England, where the “Virgin Atlantic Flyer” now resides. he was part of the team that salvaged and cleaned out the craft after the emergency landing and he confirms that there was a good sound system and a box of reel-to-reel tapes stowed on board. of course they were all destroyed but he recalls one of the reels being clearly labeled “Avant Garde Virgin Cuts”. this mix is what i imagine was on that tape Sir Branson listened to while he floated among the clouds.

luv342 Inside The Alien Machine

Inside The Alien Machine

for almost 15 years now i have been designing nanobots that can record audio and video in very small places. a few months ago the Canadian government contracted me to bring my nanobot technology to a remote place in the Yukon where an alien ship had been discovered. when i arrived they took me to what they suspected was the engine of the craft. it was an odd shaped box, the size of a small suitcase, that was encased in a smooth, hard plastic. there were no lights, displays or buttons and it made no sound. the only way we knew it was was functioning is that it had an almost imperceptible vibration to the touch. it’s only discernible feature was a small port. i was instructed to send one of my nanobots into this port and to record audio and visual of the insides so they could better understand the technology. my little machine traveled for almost 38 minutes into the depths of this alien machine before it was destroyed and the transmission was lost. unfortunately something inside the machine messed with my nanobot’s video capabilities and only a few stills were recorded. luckily the entire audio was recorded and this is what i present to you here today. i was forbidden to share this information but i thought the world needed to hear it.

Sex and Violence

five years ago i was gearing up to make the 100th mix for this website. around the same time a new friend and documentary film maker became curious about my record obsession and mentioned that he would like to film me while i was creating a mix. the combination of a film and the 100th post meant i had to take a unique approach to this mix. which got me to thinking about Monty Python’s Flying Circus and the absurdly clever way in which the episodes evolved. i wanted to make a mix like that; so i mapped out the first Monty Python episode Whither Canada?, noting all the skits, bits and segues. then i choose music, dialogue and sound effects and, while using the episode breakdown as guide, made a new journey. keep in mind this isn’t an attempt to soundtrack the show, it’s more about creating something completely different. to better understand i suggest watching Vincent Guignard‘s The Luv Of Music and then listen to luv136 Whither Canada?

now to the mix at hand. a follow up mix that gets it’s cues from the second Monty Python’s Flying Circus episode intriguingly titled Sex and Violence.

when i started this site in 2010 i also launched a craft (affectionately known as the “satellite of luv”) into outer space to take photographs and record strange and wonderful sounds. we have been monitoring s.o.l.’s journey since, and recently we received a unique bit of audio. it seems the satellite of luv got sucked into a black hole. this is a recording of the event in it’s entirety.
