i started heavily getting into electronic music in the early nineties. at that time rave culture was still fairly new but there were a number of artists that were considered pioneers in the scene; those who helped define the sound that we were all maniacally dancing to and hunting down for home listening. now it’s well over 20 years later and many of these musicians are still forging ahead, honing their craft while continuing to influence the sound of today. this, the 7th anniversary mix for dj luv’s records, is a journey consisting of more recent productions by some these legendary artists. i hope you enjoy listening to If 7 Was 9… and all of the other 320 mixtapes up on this site.

Sex and Violence

five years ago i was gearing up to make the 100th mix for this website. around the same time a new friend and documentary film maker became curious about my record obsession and mentioned that he would like to film me while i was creating a mix. the combination of a film and the 100th post meant i had to take a unique approach to this mix. which got me to thinking about Monty Python’s Flying Circus and the absurdly clever way in which the episodes evolved. i wanted to make a mix like that; so i mapped out the first Monty Python episode Whither Canada?, noting all the skits, bits and segues. then i choose music, dialogue and sound effects and, while using the episode breakdown as guide, made a new journey. keep in mind this isn’t an attempt to soundtrack the show, it’s more about creating something completely different. to better understand i suggest watching Vincent Guignard‘s The Luv Of Music and then listen to luv136 Whither Canada?

now to the mix at hand. a follow up mix that gets it’s cues from the second Monty Python’s Flying Circus episode intriguingly titled Sex and Violence.
